Ivan Rakitic

Ivan Rakitic is a Swiss-born Croatian professional footballer playing as a midfielder for FC Barcelona and Croatia national team. He is an excellent player with fast speed, great attacking ability and elegant style of play.

Early Experience

Ivan Rakitic was born in Möhlin, Switzerland and he spent his childhood there. His father and brother were footballers, so Rakitic became so interested in football when he was young. Accordingly, he began to play footballer with his family’s encouragement.

Club Career

FC Basel

Rakitic trained in the youth team of FC Basel. At the age of 17, he made his first debut for FC Basel on September 29th, 2005. In 2006-07 season, Rakitic became a regular player of the club and made his first appearance in Swiss Super League on April 15th, 2006, scoring scoring 11 goals. He was named the best young player of the 2006-07 Super League season. Besides, Rakitic assisted the team in wining Schweizer Cup in that season.

Schalke 04

Because of his talent in football, several European famous football clubs expressed interest in Rakitic’s young ability. Rakitic finally transferred to Schalke 04 for €5 million in 2007 that is a traditional and strong football club in Germany and Europe competing in Bundesliga.

On September 15th, 2007, although Rakitic scored the only goal for chalke 04 in their away match against Bayern Munich, all spectators in the stadium were impressed by the goal.

Later, Rakitic played as a strong and impressive midfielder and launched a fierce attack against Chelsea in Schalke’s home match.

Rakitic made 20 appearances in Bundesliga scoring six goals in 2009.


Rakitic signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Spanish La Liga club Sevilla for a transfer fee of €2.5 million on January 28th, 2011 and he was immediately included in the starting XI of the team.

By the end of the 2011-12 season, Rakitic made a total of 39 appearances for Sevilla, provided six assists and scored one goal in Copa del Rey.

At the 2013-14 La Liga season, Rakitic was appointed as the new captain of the club. His best performances made him win a La Liga Player of the Month award. In addition, Rakitic was included in the 2013-14 La Liga Team of the Season and UEFA Europa League Team of the Season.


On June 16th, 2014, Barcelona and Rakitic signed a five-year contract. Fútbol Club Barcelona, known as Barca, is a strong team and the candidate to fight for the champion of La Liga. Rakitic was given the squad shirt number 4.

Rakitic scored the opening goal in a 3–1 win against Italian club Juventus in the 2015 UEFA Champions League, which made Barcelona the first club in history to win the treble of domestic league, domestic cup and European Cup twice. Rakitic was included in the La Liga and European (Champions League) team of the 2014-15 season.

In 2015-2016 season, Rakitic played for Barcelona and defeated his former club Sevilla winning the 2015 UEFA Super Cup. In October, he was announced Croatian Footballer of the Year 2015.
