Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini, known as Lionel Messi, is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and Argentina national team. Messi is well known by his stunning header and speed. His feet are extremely flexible and strong. In addition, his shoot by free kick also becomes a unique landscape in La Liga. He has been widely regarded as another Maradona.

FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi signed a new contract that will keep the Argentinian superstar at the Club through the 2020/21 season. The buyout clause was set at €700m. Thus, by the time the new deal expires, the 30-year-old striker will have spent 17 years with the first team.

Early Life

When he was five years old, Messi started to play football in local youth team, and the coach was his father. At the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with a developmental hormone deficiency that would hinder his bony growth from growing taller. But, his family can not afford the treatment costs. Fortunately, he was taken to Barcelona by coach Cuca because of his talent in 2000. 13-year-old Messi, only 140cm, went to Barcelona training camp in September. His performance conquered the coach of Barcelona youth team, so they had signed a work contract with Messi until 2012. FC Barcelona helped Messi do exercises to make him become taller. Now, he is 170cm.

Club Career

In 2005/06 season, Barcelona played its away game against Real Madrid, a strong club competing in La Liga. Messi’s performance made Barcelona win Real Madrid successfully.

In 2006/07 season, Messi caught up with Real Madrid three times by a hat trick. Finally, there was a draw 3-3. He became the first Barcelona player who used “hat trick” in El Clásico after Brazil national team player Mário Sérgio. In addition, Barcelona won Copa del Rey.

Messi, as the leader of Barcelona, got three consecutive victories in La Liga, UEFA Champions League, and Copa del Rey in 2008/09 season.

International Career

Messi, together with the players of Argentina national team, got the champion of 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Argentina national team defeated Venezuela national team 4-0 in a qualifying game of 2010 FIFA World Cup in 2009. The three excellent footballers, Carlos Tévez, Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero, scored one goal respectively, which made the team win the game. Messi accordingly got Ballon d’Or award and the Best FIFA Men’s Player award.

Individual Awards
